Sumahan On The Water, Istanbul
A Brilliant Boutique
Sumahan On The Water is one of Istanbul’s most exciting new hotel offerings, opening it doors in May 2005 in a restored nineteenth-century Ottoman distillery. Sumahan is an intelligent take on historical restoration situated on the gorgeous Bosphorus Strait and now firmly in place as one of the city’s architectural gems. Wood and marble, steel and brick – all converge in harmony and elegance at the Sumahan.
The hotel integrates top-quality design and modern trappings within a historical context. This is a rare waterfront property that has remained in the hands of the original family that owned it. Turkish-American owners and architects Nedret and Mark Butler have transformed this family heirloom from a dilapidated factory to unique retreat within the city. Sumahan commands an enviable view of the Bosphorus from its perch on the Asian side of the city, beautifully framing the famous skyline of domes and minarets. The well-appointed rooms here play off light and water, with large windows that overlook the Bosphorus, fire places in most rooms and a unique personality in all of them. The changing colour of the sea is reflected in the interior color scheme, an array of gentle blues and mysterious greens. The furnishings are contemporary; the large bathrooms have thick Turkish towels and are influenced by the traditional Turkish hamam design. Rooms are equipped with Internet access, LCD TV, DVD and CD players.
Wellness treatments at the Sumahan surround guests in lavender, orange, mint, bergamot and rose aromas, creating an ideally soothing environment for a variety of massage treatments including deep-tissue, reflexology, and four-hand massage. A hamam and state-of-the-art exercise room round out the fitness offerings. For dining, the Sumahan also features one of Istanbul’s finest seafood restaurants, Kordon, with a wide variety of fresh fish dishes.
