Four Seasons Hotel, Istanbul at Sultanahmet
From rags to riches
In a city known throughout the centuries for luxury, decadence and discerning taste, the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet is truly one of the finest examples today of this well-deserved reputation. This boutique-sized hotel was converted from a century-old neoclassic prison, carefully restored and overhauled into an intimate and moving setting. Rooms and suites boast of oversized windows overlooking a peaceful and carefully manicured garden courtyard.
Although history has reversed itself here, turning a prison into a palace, the sense of Istanbul’s past at the Four Seasons is palable and powerful. The hotel’s architects were faithful to classic Ottoman building practices, and their slavish attention to detail pays off for guests today.
Oversized windows allow the bright Turkish sun to bless the rooms, which are each situated with a view overlooking the courtyard. Many of the five classes of rooms and three exclusive suites bear unique touches, layouts and decor, reflecting the history of the building and its shapes.
Spa and massage services are available in the health club, and there are three lounges in the hotel that offer up a taste of Ottoman luxury. The Seasons Restaurant, in the hotel courtyard, offers indoor and outdoor dining, and was recently named the best hotel restaurant in Istanbul. Menus are adjusted by season, and include local flavours hard to master, such as rose-water pudding, as well as the best of continental and international flavours. Once outside the confines of this unique and splendid hotel, guests are within walking distance of the highights that draw tourists to Istanbul – Haigha Sofia, Topkapi Palace, and the Blue Mosque.
